Connie Hawkins, ECAC’s founder and former executive director, honored at UNC Charlotte’s Cato Mural Celebration

Congratulations to ECAC’s founder and former executive director, Connie Hawkins who was recently honored by the University of Charlotte’s College of Education at the Cato Mural Celebration on April 25, 2018.

The mural stands in memoriam to educators and others who have shaped children’s lives and inspired future educators by showing the impact they can have on their students. Chancellor Phillip L. Dubois stated that the mural “honors anyone who has been a great teacher who, maybe, taught life’s lessons over and over outside the boundaries of a classroom or a professional title.” Indeed, Connie Hawkins, a tireless advocate for families raising children with disabilities and special health care needs, meets this criteria.

The Cato Teaching Discovery Mural includes more than 375 square feet of carvings that reside on four large stone monuments in abstract shapes. Historical and cultural information about North Carolina and the region are featured through hundreds of images including the founding of the state and the Charlotte region, discovery of gold, key people and events related to education, notable acts in the pursuit of freedom, traditional arts and entertainment in the state, a salute to classroom teachers, historical and current areas of state and regional commerce and a collage of state sights and symbols. Connie’s name along with other honored teachers and professionals has been permanently inscribed upon the Mural.  This incredible work of art honors the teaching profession, and individuals who have made a great impact, and will inspire future generations of educators who will walk by the mural every day.

Thank you Connie for your leadership and vision for children and young adults who have special needs and their families.
