July 12, 2017 – ECAC names new Executive Director!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE . . .

Laura J. Weber, Ph.D. is the Exceptional Children’s Assistance Center’s new Executive Director.

The Board of Directors of the Exceptional Children’s Assistance Center (ECAC), is pleased to announce that they have chosen Laura J. Weber, Ph.D., as their new Executive Director. Laura follows Connie K. Hawkins, ECAC’s founder and long-time Executive Director. Founded in 1983, ECAC is a statewide, full-service parent center with a variety of programs for families of children and youth with disabilities and special health care needs, ages birth to 26.

Laura spent more than 20 years working to help service systems to become fair and accountable to the families that they serve. For several years, she was employed by ECAC as Manager of Mental Health Contracts and in this role, Laura worked with young people to develop and implement Powerful Youth Friends United, a statewide advocacy and support group for youth with mental health challenges. Prior to returning to ECAC in 2016, Laura was a Senior Project Director at the Center for Creative Leadership where she managed a leadership program for

college students from rural North Carolina and designed and implemented a Women’s Leadership Development curriculum. Before accepting the role of Executive Director, Laura was ECAC’s Director of Planning and Evaluation followed by the role of ECAC’s Co-Director (Interim). In addition, Laura owned a consulting practice for the last 20 years focusing on providing technical assistance, facilitation, coaching and training services for public, nonprofit and academic organizations with the goal of developing principle-centered work, and building individual, organizational and community capacity for growth and change.

Laura has a deep commitment to family leadership. She has provided family leadership trainings, created and implemented family-centered curricula to service workers, provided technical assistance and support to family-run organizations, and advocated for policies that support the empowerment and inclusion of families and youth. Laura co-founded the N.C. Family Resource Coalition, a public-private nonprofit committed to engaging families in systems change and to helping practitioners develop deeper skills in family support and family empowerment.

ECAC’s Board of Directors has great confidence in Laura’s abilities to continue ECAC’s work to improve the lives and education of ALL children through an emphasis on children with disabilities and special health care needs.  Please join us in welcoming Laura. You may reach out to Laura directly via email.
